Privacy Policy
in plain English first.

The plain-English version is on the left of every clause, the legal text on the right. We intend them to mean the same thing — the plain-English is a guide to the legal text, and if they ever conflict, the legal text controls.

Who we are

· In plain English7gens is an online service that turns your family's materials into a printed history book. When you give us your data, we and our trusted providers process it only to run that service.

7gens, LLC, a Delaware limited liability company, is the business responsible for the personal information you provide (the "controller"). We process it in accordance with applicable U.S. federal and state privacy laws, including the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (CCPA/CPRA), and, where it applies to you, other applicable data-protection law. You can reach us about any privacy matter at privacy@7gens.me.

· 02

What we collect

· In plain EnglishAccount info, the family material you upload, billing details, and what you do inside the workshop. Nothing bought from data brokers.

We collect: (i) account data (name, email, authentication identifiers); (ii) billing data (processed by Stripe; we never store full card numbers); (iii) family material you upload (photographs, documents, audio, transcripts, names, dates, places, correspondence); (iv) material generated for you (AI drafts, citations, research notes); (v) workshop and security logs (edits, agent invocations, IP address, device and session data). We do not buy personal data from data brokers.

· 03

Sensitive information

· In plain EnglishFamily history can reveal sensitive things — ethnicity, religion, health hints, family relationships. You decide what to upload; we protect it as sensitive.

Genealogical material can reveal information treated as sensitive or special-category under some laws, including racial or ethnic origin, religious belief, health, and data about family relationships. You decide what to upload. Where the law requires consent for sensitive information about you, your upload of it together with your acceptance of this policy constitutes that consent, which you may withdraw by deleting the material or closing your account. For sensitive material about living relatives or other third parties, you confirm that you have a lawful basis, or any consent the law requires, to upload it and have us process it.

· 04

Why we use it

· In plain EnglishTo run your account, build your book, take payment, support you, keep the service secure, and meet legal duties. Nothing else.

We process personal information to: (a) provide the Service and produce your book (performance of our contract with you); (b) take payment and prevent fraud; (c) provide support and service communications; (d) secure and improve the Service (our legitimate interest in a safe, working product); (e) comply with legal, tax, and accounting obligations. Where consent is the lawful basis, you may withdraw it at any time.

· 05

What we never do

· In plain EnglishWe never sell your data. We never use your family material to train AI models. We never share it with advertisers or other customers.

We will not (a) sell, rent, or share your personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising or to any third party for its own marketing; (b) use your family material as training data for any machine-learning or foundation model, our own or a provider's; (c) disclose your data to advertising networks; (d) grant other 7gens customers or unrelated third parties access to your material.

· 06

How AI handles your material

· In plain EnglishWe use AI providers to read, draft, and check your book — as our processors, under contract, with no right to train on your material.

To research, draft, translate, and fact-check your book we send relevant material to AI providers (currently Google, for Gemini models) acting as our processors under terms that prohibit using your content to train their models. AI output can be incomplete or wrong and is reviewed before it becomes part of your book. See our AI & Data Processing notice for detail.

· 07

Who we share it with

· In plain EnglishOnly the vendors that help us run the service — payments, AI, hosting, email, printing — each under contract. The current list is published.

We share personal information only with sub-processors who help us operate the Service, each bound by a data-processing agreement: Stripe (payments), Google including Google Cloud and Gemini (hosting, storage, and AI processing), Resend (transactional email), and Lulu (print fulfilment and shipping). To produce genealogical research we may also query third-party archives and genealogy databases (such as FamilySearch, WikiTree, and Wikidata). Our current sub-processor list is at /en/legal/subprocessors.

· 08

Where your data goes

· In plain EnglishWe're U.S.-based, and some providers process data in the U.S. and elsewhere. We use lawful safeguards for international transfers.

7gens, LLC is organized in the State of Delaware, USA; our operations may be located in Israel and other countries. Our providers may process personal information in the United States and other countries. Where personal information is transferred from a region with data-export rules (such as the EEA, the UK, or Israel), we rely on recognised transfer mechanisms (such as Standard Contractual Clauses) or another lawful basis.

· 09

Material about other people

· In plain EnglishFamily books are full of other people. Only upload material you have the right to use, and get any consents the law requires.

Genealogical material necessarily concerns people other than you, including living relatives and third parties. You confirm that you have a lawful basis to upload it and to have us process it, and that you have obtained any consent required by applicable law (for example, from living relatives). If someone asks us to remove information about them, contact us at privacy@7gens.me and we will act on valid requests.

· 010

Children

· In plain EnglishThe service isn't for children to sign up. Material about children must only be uploaded by an adult with the right to do so.

The Service is not directed to children, and you must be an adult to create an account. You may upload material concerning minors only where you are a parent or guardian, or otherwise have a lawful basis to do so. We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13 (or the minimum age in your jurisdiction).

· 011

How long we keep it

· In plain EnglishAccount material: as long as your account is open. Closed accounts: deleted within 30 days. Billing records: kept as long as the law requires.

We retain account and family material while your account is active. On closure, personal data is deleted within thirty (30) days, except: tax and accounting records (retained up to seven (7) years as required by applicable law); security and audit logs (limited periods); and backups (purged on their normal cycle). A deletion certificate is issued by email.

· 012

How we protect it

· In plain EnglishEncryption, access controls, and limited staff access. If something goes wrong, we'll tell you and the authorities where required.

We use encryption in transit and at rest, access controls, and staff access limited to those who need it. No system is perfectly secure. If a breach affects your personal information we will notify you and the relevant authorities where the law requires, and we will notify any affected provider (such as Stripe) as required by our agreements.

· 013

Your rights

· In plain EnglishYou can know, access, correct, export, and delete your data, and opt out of any sale or sharing. We answer within 45 days.

Under the CCPA/CPRA you have the right to know, access, correct, delete, and port your personal information, and to opt out of its sale or sharing; we do not discriminate against you for exercising them. Where other laws apply, you may also have rights to object, restrict, or withdraw consent. Write to privacy@7gens.me; we respond within forty-five (45) days. You may complain to the California Privacy Protection Agency, your state attorney general, or your local supervisory authority.
