Export your tree from Geni

Geni prepares the GEDCOM file and emails you a link to download it. You need to be logged in.

Step by step

  1. Log in to Geni.
  2. Open the profile you want the export to start from and choose "Actions" → "Export GEDCOM".
  3. Geni generates the file and emails you a link to download it.

Labels in quotes are copied from Geni's help pages; if a screen looks different, those pages are the reference.

If something goes wrong

  • Big trees take longer to prepare.
  • No email? Check your spam folder, or open Geni's GEDCOM download page.

Good to know

  • Geni's help says the file includes profile details as you have permission to see them, but not whether photos, sources or notes come along. When you import it, 7gens shows you who is in it before anything is saved and tells you if it arrived without photos.
  • Geni's help article on exporting was last updated in 2019. It describes limits — basic accounts up to four times the number of profiles they added, to a maximum of 5,000; Pro accounts up to 50,000 — and more options, such as which relatives to include and hiding private profiles. We couldn't confirm that these are still current.
  • Geni's two help pages differ on whose profiles you can export: one says any profile you added or your immediate family, the other only profiles you added.
